An answering service takes a message. Doorkeep decides whether the message needs you right now.
That is the whole difference, and it is the part that changes your evenings.
What an answering service does
A human or a script picks up, writes down who called and why, and passes it along. Every call comes back to you looking the same. A leaking water heater and a question about the pool gate arrive in the same inbox with the same urgency, which means you still have to read all of them to find the one that matters.
What Doorkeep does
The agent works out what kind of call it is, captures the specific information that call type actually needs, and decides where it goes. A life-safety situation gets escalated immediately. A routine maintenance request gets documented and lands in your morning summary. A prospect gets their leasing questions captured while they are still interested instead of hitting voicemail.
When a call should reach you live, the agent briefs you before connecting, so you pick up already knowing it is Jane in Unit 4 with a leaking kitchen sink.
What it deliberately will not do
The agent never tells a caller what to do. It does not give safety instructions, walk someone through shutting off a water valve, or troubleshoot an appliance. It detects, connects, and documents. That is a deliberate limit, not a missing feature, and it is why the agent can run unsupervised on your line without creating liability you did not sign up for.
It also does not dispatch vendors, schedule repairs, or authorize work. Those decisions stay with you.
