How Doorkeep handles emergencies

What happens when a caller describes something urgent, and what Doorkeep will not do.

Written by Andy Peters

Emergency handling is the reason most property managers look at Doorkeep in the first place. Here is exactly how it works.

What happens on an emergency call

  1. Doorkeep is designed to recognize life-safety situations and categorize the call as urgent.

  2. It offers to connect the caller to the property manager, and reminds them to call 911 if they have not already.

  3. You and your emergency contact are notified by call and text at the same time.

  4. The call is logged with a full transcript, regardless of how it ended.

It errs toward waking you

When there is doubt about urgency, Doorkeep escalates. A false alarm at 2am is a smaller problem than a missed burst pipe. That bias is deliberate, and it is why emergency alerts cannot be switched off. See Why emergency alerts can't be turned off.

What Doorkeep will not do

It will not tell a caller to evacuate, shut off a water main, unplug an appliance, or take any other protective action. The agent detects, connects, and documents. Giving safety instructions is outside its role, by design.

Doorkeep is not an emergency service

No AI system catches every situation. If a caller describes an emergency in a way Doorkeep does not detect, they will not be redirected. Doorkeep does not replace 911 and is not a substitute for your own emergency procedures.

Our Terms of Service include explicit emergency services disclaimers. The Trust and Compliance page covers this in plain language.
